| + | Josiah Jeremy's, "The Floting Island" and John Heckewelder's "The Arrival of the Dutch" have very similar accounts of how the natives encountered the Europeans. First of all, It seems that there is a priest who is a key figure in being one of the first to come to shore. they are the ones who give the natives presents and show signs of peace. I find it ironic that there seems to always be a show of peace and friendship toward the natives, then fighting breaks out. I think the natives of Manhattan got their first look at how crafty the Europeans were when they pulled that trick with the bull hide, cutting it up so they could get more land.-Kristina Scrimshaw | ||
