Early recognition of the women's movement has been around since the 17th century, as far as I know, but it's interesting to see that this movement is concieved as permeating "into rural America just like the modern appliances and utilities had". (I just thought this comparison was interesting.) But expanding on Megan's point, I can see that the bulk of these inventions we're reading about were designed to ease men's problems. | + | The mechanization of labor and the promotion of consumer culture did nothing to help women get out of the kitchen as Kleinegger examines in her entry. Factories didn't even hire out to women workers, instead leaving those few jobs that existed to men whom were believed to be more suited to factory work. Mechanization did nothing but deepen the ravine between men and women in the labor force. Its amazing to see the blatant misdirection of advertising at the time to mislead people (mostly women, of course) into thinking these devices would improve their lot in life. - Scott Birney | ||
