This movie showed the difference between WWII veterans and Vietnam War veterans. WWII veterans were respected and honored more than Vietnam veterans. This is shown in the parades - the one in the beginning when Ron was little and the one that Ron was in as a veteran. When the WWII vets walked in the parade everyone respected them and cheered. But when the Vietnam vets were in the parade, some people cursed and said disrespectful things to them. It also showed how Ron and many people saw the WWII vets as heroes before he went to Vietnam. This was shown in pop culture during that time. When Ron was in the grocery store talking to Donna, "Soldier Boy" by the Shirelles was playing in the background. It also showed the similarities between the WWII and Vietnam vets in regards to PTSD. In the beginning, one of the WWII vets was alarmed when firecrackers went off. Halfway through the movie when Ron was in the parade, he was startled too by the firecrackers because it reminded him of war. There are so many things I could say about this movie. I think it did a good job with showing many different aspects to the Vietnam War. -- Justine R.

The thing that struck me most from the entire movie was the scene in the VA hospital in which he's screaming, "I WANT TO BE TREATED LIKE A HUMAN BEING.  DECENT.  THAT'S ALL."  For me, that really sums up how a lot of returning Vietnam vets felt after the war.  The public reaction to Vietnam was so different to that to WWII, and veterans were not prepared for the responses they got at all.  There are a lot of accurate parts of this movie, but for me, that scene really sums everything up.  -- P.A.
