| + | Just as Rachael mentioned, "The Tyranny of the Company Store" was accurately depicted in the movie. Many times, it was stated by some mine workers about how the "prices would go up the same week that the tonnage rate went down." It was clear that the company store controlled the lives, but in a broader sense, the mining company to a certain extent "enslaved" the coal miners. In the reading, it stated, "To enslave and starve a man, or to drive him to desperation by actions the most uncharitable and unjust." Coal miners had very little freedom as we learned on Tuesday. Even in the movie, Eleanor told Joe Kinehan that if you're not with the company, there was no work. This movie showed the terrible conditions in the mine just like readings showed. Even though the movie did not focus on the conditions of the mine, it did begin and end with those scenes which made them important and remembered. The readings were very shocking and it was difficult to read some of them because the explained terrible conditions and they were sad - like the Tennessee Coal Miners' Last Words. - Justine R. | This movie showed the terrible conditions in the mine just like readings showed.
