The different relationships that formed within Col. Shaw's unit were accurate.  The tension between Col. Shaw and his Capt would have arose out of different views as to what was expected.  Col. Shaw saw the importance of ensuring the enlisted's competence in the eventuality of battle, while the Capt. believed the men would never see battle, so was initially satified with their unskilled experience.  Another issue that the movie got right about Col. Shaw was in the way he respected his men and endlessly worked to have their contributions to the Civil War be more than just one of menial work.  These me, most being escaped slaves, desired to participate in the events which would make all blacks American citizens.-Debbie M.
