I'm surprised Michael G hasn't mentioned the director including death by common diseases of the day. But I was (er..) "satisfied" that at least some people died of typhoid, dysentery or yellow fever. Clearly this film is far more hardcore than the Patriot, Mel Gibson clearly you need to learn from the classics. You can still have realistic issues (terminal illnesses) and be an award winning film.

There were several things I noticed that seemed small, but created a well rounded background for this film and the time period it portrayed. For example, when Scarlett was going to Atlanta, her mother said she could "take Prissy with her" as if Prissy were a thing to be taken wherever. Scarlett also threatens to beat Prissy several times, which goes back to what we were discussing inc class, that women were often times just as harsh with slaves as men. Another example was during the hospital scene, the doctor states, he's out of medicine, which was common during the war. I also thought it was interesting that you could see a clear distinction before and after the war of the new set of manners in the South. When Scarlett goes into the city after the war, no one is giving her the walkway, even the black men that were singing, men are "cat calling" her; all of which Scarlett contributes to the Yankees. I think the set up of these types of things set the mood and feeling of the South, both before and after the war and how it changed dramatically. All in all, I wasn't as disappointed as I thought I'd be. - Victoria Y.
