One of the points that the movie got right was the reason that many of the men went to war. Scarlett's father says in the beginning of the movie that she can't hate Tara because their land was the only thing that was worth working or fighting for. this clearly drives Scarlett's motivation throughout the film, as her subsequent marriage to Frank Kennedy and work on the plantation are primarily to save Tara. I also thought that it was interesting that in the end of the film, Ashley says that he would have freed all of his slaves when his father died whether they were legally emancipated or not. | + | Though this might sound wrong, my historical snob alter-ego was satisfied when the characters were killed off by disease instead of tomahawk. Much less exciting, but so historically pleasing. Additionally, the portrayal of Southern men after the war was pretty accurate. Mr. O'Hara clearly suffers from a bruised ego and depression. The men all return with a form of PTSD and regrets. Going along with this, the film also depicts the excitement of many men to go to war. They saw it as an adventure instead of a brutal atrocity. Lastly, the hospital scene showed the chaotic and brutal nature of war. Amputations, lack of pain killers, no sanitation, and lack of doctors and nurses are all included. --Anna Holman | ||
