I agree that the praise is the scariest part--it's what keeps fueling Chernik's delusions--and it comes from all sides (not only the random strangers, but also her friends and family). The most chilling part of her essay, for me, is when she has her body fat tested, is found to be severely underweight, and is outright congratulated, and even rewarded, for her unhealthiness. That's the turning point in her story, when she realizes that anorexia is not really about controlling her body/life, but really society controlling her. I think the pathology here is very very interesting, and that more women and girls need to read this essay, to see what it's really like to be a full-fledged anorexic, that it is an out-of-control disease and not glamorous at all. --Sarah Smethurst | I agree that the praise is the scariest part--it's what keeps fueling Chernik's delusions--and it comes from all sides (not only the random strangers, but also her friends and family). | + | This article really struck me, as three of my friends have struggled with anorexia. One of them is a guy, so I do not want us to forget that body image is not only something women struggle with. However, I think it is safe to say that it is a much more pronounced problem for women. One of the most striking things about this piece is the societal idea that the most beautiful women are those “who resemble little girls.” This idea caused Chernik to reject the changes puberty wrought in her rather than embrace them, and this is incredibly sad to me. And these societal perceptions of beauty are a much more amorphous thing to fight against than unequal wages or something similar, as the government can only enact so many laws against the media without abridging the right to free speech, and it certainly can’t command people to change their minds about beauty. Hopefully, as more women like Chernik who have struggled with eating disorders become more outspoken about their experiences, change will come. – Alice W | ||
