| + | I found this article to be really interesting because it shows that black women felt the need to help their country just as much as the white women did. The reason it is so interesting to me is because up until this time, the country had not done much for the black community, so why should they feel like they need to be helping their country? The answer to that question is sort of what Bethune is getting at. She is saying that the black community has earned the right to be patriotic and defensive of their country because they ''are'' citizens. She wants to be treated like the white citizens who are defending their country because she is a hardworking citizen too. On page 372, she says while speaking about the black community, "they, too, have earned the right to be numbered among the active forces who are working towards the protection of our democratic stronghold." I think that Mary Bethune wants the President to know that black women love their country and want to protect it, and they should be given the right to do so. - Angie | ||
