I think it's sad that we hear so many stories of soldiers raping civilians. British soldiers did it during the Revolution. American soldiers raped Native Americans. I agree with Kristina, Amy, and Katelyn it is interesting that a white citizen is standing up for Indian women. Most white people thought Indians were inferior to them and it is nice to see that someone does care about them. I think the author used the term "pretend Lieut" because they did not want to think people in the Army could be as cruel as any criminal. - LeAnn Taggart
