I thought that this was a very interesting piece. I was very happy that a citizen would protest the rape of Native Americans even if the ones committing the crime were officers in the US army. I did find it particularly interesting though that the person refers to one officer as possibly being a "pretend Lieut." I would be curious to know if impersonating soldiers was at all typical if the men could get away with it,(or at least think they could get away with it).-Kristina.S.

I agree with you Kristina that I liked the fact that someone stood up to white men especially soldiers. I wonder the reasons why someone would be a "pretend Lieutenant" if he really was one. Maybe for cases such as this? Knowing that they could do basically whatever they want as a soldier and not get away with it?  -Amy Van Ness
