In response to LeAnn's comment about the difference between the punishment for a man and a woman, I believe that one reason Rebecca received a stricter punishment was that during the seventeenth century ''women were responsible for controlling a man's sexual advances'', at least in the Chesapeake region. If this perspective translated to MA beliefs, it makes a just cause to not only fine both parties, but publicly humiliate the woman, who was seen by the courts as having a greater responsibility.
