| − | | + | As a modern reader, I found Thomas Paine’s essay very condescending. I also had difficulty locating the rights Thomas Paine admitted that women possessed, as indicated by the title. Paine spent most of the essay pitying women: “Cruel distempers attack their beauty- and the hour, which confirms their release from those, is perhaps the most melancholy of their lives. It robs them of the most essential characteristic of their sex (288).” This article did not acclaim a woman’s older years as a time of potentially more social respect and authority; instead Paine asserted that older women were very depressed because they lost their beauty. -Allison Luthern |
