I find both of these articles, and some of those that we have read in the past, incredibly depressing. I think that, along with many other similar occurrences, that groups of people feel, or felt, the need to make everyone conform to a single ideal, or that individuals and groups had the desire to assimilate entirely into another culture. Each culture and unit of it is unique and can provide a perspective on an aspect of life that one might not consider with out the understanding of the other or juxtaposition with one's own cultural background. Diversity makes us who we are and allows us both to define ourselves and to provide security within a group. Having it quashed would, I think, destroy our very sense of being. | + | It's funny how awful Manifest Destiny can seem when we start to really study it, isn't it? The problem with wanting diversity in this time period is that it would interfere with the White Man's idea of America, and such interference could not be tolerated. As we have seen through this semester (and through most of our History studies, as well) the various cultures had plenty to offer to the society they introduced themselves to, but no one really felt interested in playing along. I shudder to think what we would find if we were able to offer up a revisionist view of history. Certainly, things may have played out a little rosier. -Cash | ||
