I know this is from a book titled ''American Manhood'', so I do understand that it is supposed to be about males.  However, this irks me from earlier centuries and still irks me today.  There is a sexual double standard that exists that pisses me off.  Males get encouraged and praised for having sexual relations with multiple women, it gets it encouraged and they don't get derogatory names for doing so.  They get called player and man-whore is a phrase that I've seen guys only take with pride and usually given to them with pride.  However, women can't have sexual relations like men do.  If women have sex with lots of guys she gets called whore, slut, hoe, prostitute, etc...  The double standard is so annoying!  I'm not saying men and women should go around and have sex with everything that walks and everything be all hunky dorey, I'm just annoyed with the double standards that have been in place for centuries and are still in place today.  --Ashley Wilkins

I also found the double standard irritating.  Women were expected to be so much more moral and proper than men were and quite frequently they ended up with a ruined reputation for some minor action.  I thought that some of that was interesting, however, especially in the section on courtship.  Rotundo makes some interesting comments on women who were considered coquettes and the fact that king of behavior might be their only way to grasp control in the situation and they were seen as manipulative or vain and flighty. -Lacey
