| + | Before reading this article I did not realize how many choices and responsibilities black women had to their families during and after the civil war. I never took into account that families were often broken up by sales and death. It was all too common to see single black mothers taking care of their children. I was particularly touched by the story of the black women with two children under her arms, another child on her back, a live chicken, a pig and a goat. These women often had to do everything by themselves. –Andrew B | ||
