I wanted to elaborate on Kellye's point a bit and just point out that, as twenty-first century individuals, we tend to forget that (enslaved) black women once did not have ownership of their own bodies. Because they were property their bodies too were simply a thing that belonged to a white slave owner. Essentially, they were toys for their masters to play with, as horrible as that sounds. I did find it interesting though, that at one point Rothman discussed the issue of Malinda, a slave woman who killed another black man as he tried to sexually assault her. Against someone of her own kind, she had the ability to cry self-defense. | + | I found this chapter to be very disturbing first of all. However, I found the case of Peggy and Patrick very interesting. They were first given the death penalty, but the jury thought that Peggy received mercy because of her horrible treatment prior to the murder. It was almost like these white men were trying to say that her horrible treatment was a rare case and that slave owners are not normally like that in order to give slaveholders a better name. -- Kari W. | ||
