Andrew, I feel this is similar to what we were discussing in class.  We have a tendency to find behavior which as a whole we find wrong, somehow less wrong in considering the founders.  I feel that Rothman continues this trend to an extent regardign Hemings, but not regarding Callender.  Sexism?

I thought the negotiation powers that Sally had while in France were very interesting.  It seemed like slaves in that position really had no choice but to believe their masters would keep their word.  In France, she had very little opportunity and was away from their families and if she went to Virginia she could stay with her family and have some more freedoms.  Was this a common occurrence or was this just a Thomas Jefferson/wealthy elite thing? -- Kari W.
