| + | Slave families were certainly different from free families. Although there are a number of similarities, there were numerous differences. I found one passage to be extremely telling of the situation--“We were not allowed to call our mammies ‘mother.’” In some cases, slave families were not even recognized by whites. It is hard to form a cohesive family unit when you are dominated by a group of people who do not recognize your right to a family. It is easy to see why the community played such a large role in the slave family. –Andrew B | ||
