After reading both sections of Stevenson's book about white and black families, I wonder which group this statement applies to best: it takes a village to raise a child. I can see both sides. White families may have had a mid-wife involved in the family, along with slave nurses, and extended family. White women seem to have had more time to raise their own children. In black families and communities, childrearing defaulted to other slaves and older women. Mothers had little if any time to be mothers, and may have been separated from their kids either by work or sale. | + | It is interesting to see the parallels between slave families and white families during industrialization. Both sets were facing exploitation of some sort, and both relied on the community. In the case of slaves, the community functioned as a defacto family. One could count on the community to raise your child if you were every separated. The community was also responsible for babysitting and food preparation. –Andrew B | ||
