In some ways, the slave children can be compared to the children of the slums in the NY.  Only sorta mind you.  The comparison is that they both had to start working from a really early age.  I know we didn't get an age for the kids in NY, but the slave children were working at the age of 6... which means some of them probably got beat for 'misbehaving' at the age of 6... or even younger. :-(
