The influx of immigrants, post-Revolution conditions, rise of the city, and economic and gender expectations all played a role in the change in family structure. It seems though that "republican motherhood" did not apply to women outside the middle class, and in fact, lower-class women were looked down upon for not being able to be educators. Also, as we discussed in class, the advent of American patriotism coincided with a new American family.
