In Ron's Vietnam scene, his unit shoots at huts in this village and then go investigate. But when they find the bodies, they freak out because they realize they're just civilians, and actually call medics to help these innocent people. The Lieutenant is hardly able to keep them under control. It seems implausible they would have reacted like that, because at this point in the war, they would have known the villagers they shot at may or may not be VC.
