Did these ads actually work?  They contain so little information and the odds of the people they are looking for will read them are not very good.  Was this just a last desperate plea or were these actually successful? -Jenna Shevlin

I found it interesting that in the Advertisements from the Christian Recorder many of the people who are looking for a lost family member refer back to the last person that he or she belonged to.  The Recorder's articles go until 1870 and in these articles the former slaves are still referring to the people who had once owned them or their loved ones.  This shows that even many years after the end of the war freed slaves still had to identify with their former masters to be able to help identify themselves and their loved ones.  They were not able to escape the title of once being owned by another person. ~Renee Rosser

After reading this I was wondering just how the newly freed population reconciled the fact that they were free, but others still weren't wiling to view them as free (as evidenced by how they identified them).  How were they able to declare their freedom and yet still be viewed as captive by the whites?--Kathleen Dray
