I don't know about the rest of you, but my overwhelming feeling while reading this article was one of confusion. Who are the Chicanas? I feel like I need some more content knowledge to fully appreciate this piece. I agree with the several previous statements about the plight of this minority - it was one experienced by many women. Of course the experiences of a minority female are aggravated by the acute racism the country has had and still has today. One of the most unsettling parts of this piece was the part about the doctor prescribing placebos to his patients under the disguise of birth control, and of course the women got pregnant. The doctor's reasoning? Because "Mrs. Gomez from the West Side" just wouldn't understand such things. Unfortunately, I still see this racial prejudice today. | + | Since Chicanos are Latin American, is not their sexual discrimination very close to being exactly the same as those experienced and perpetuated by white people? They have the same European origins and the concepts of femininity contained within machismo and male chauvinism are almost the same. I wonder how that changes things. They certainly did not have the same situation as black women as far as sexual discrimination within their culture was concerned. --Justin Mattos | ||
