were whites more afraid of the violence and insurrection that the slaves were capable of, or the fact that slaves were becoming more and more educated?  In The Narrative of Frederick Douglas, Douglas states that becoming educated was the only thing that seperated him from the whites and once he was educated he was dangerous.  The whites had to be thinking some of this at the time of Nat Turner's Rebellion, for, as you see from the reading, Turner was a rather well-spoken individual who was at least educated. - Landon James

This article about Nat Turner was interesting.... The time when he overheard the scripture: "Seek ye the kingdom of heaven..." he was strucked by it that he "reflected much on this passage, and prayed daily for light on this subject." Then a spirit spoke to him and said that same exact passage. it seems like he just imagined or hallucinated that for he did say that he devoted his time to fasting and prayer which can drain one's energy. About him believing that he was extraordinary and special was not entirely his fault but that everyone was telling him since childhood that he was someone special who was born for some great purpose. ---Eun Yi
