Vicki Ruiz addresses the cultural, political and economic influences on adolescent Mexican American women.  She ends this essay asking the question, "Can one equate the desire for material goods with the abandonment of Mexican values?"  I think that the loss of Mexican values in seeking material comforts can vary and is based upon the environment in which they seek them.--LisaM

I found Joyce Johnson's piece on whole was very surprising. I thought she was very specific and very honest about her experiences. She mentioned details such as "..that smelled of smoke and soiled clothing..." and "the room looked like a room in which only the very poor would ever wait." I can't help but feel sorry for her in the guilt she must be left with in order to remain independent. I also noticed her ability to see a therapist and wondered how common this was at the time? I know that usually one must have a signficant amount of money for a therapist and I wondered how she afforded the treatment and not the abortion. I also wondered her age and thought it would be quite relevant to the nature of her experiences. -- Meredith Bojarski
