Also, I was doing some research and found that other countries actually celebrate Columbus Day as well…except they all call it something totally different, which ties into my last point I made about how we commemorate the constructive effects of Columbus’ voyage instead of Columbus himself or the negative effects. For example, many countries in Latin America celebrate “Dia de la Raza” (Day of the Race); in Costa Rica “Dia de las Culturas” (Day of the Cultures); in Spain “Dia de la Hispanidad,” etc… As you can see, they are all observing the same event, and by the definitions of the holiday titles you can see that they are actually a celebration of new culture and race (which is obviously something important to them and therefore worth celebrating).
