Venus Green’s statement “The Bell System racial ideology trapped black women” (265) is an excellent use of a metaphor to explain the working environment African American women’s experience in being paid lower-paying salaries, having more stressful demands for their work, and having little to any opportunity for job advancements. Throughout reading the article, I too was shocked at certain comments made, such as statements made about African American women’s lack of intelligence and qualifications. Regardless of laws that were made to say that America (or at least certain states) were not to refuse employment based on race, color, or religion. Regardless of laws, African American women still struggled to be able to work their way up the ladder-managers would leave African American women’s Upgrade and Transfer applications unprocessed, not allowing them to successfully move up. –Megan Gallagher
