| + | Oliver Stone effectively portrayed the negative reception that veterans received when they returned to society. Even Ron’s family turned against him. He was treated poorly in the hospital, and did not assimilate back into society very well. There were strong anti-war sentiments. Many civilians said that the soldiers in Vietnam did not know what was going on at home and that they thought they were fighting for a good cause against Communism. The home front was more informed than the soldiers. I liked how Stone actually used the real speeches of Kennedy and Nixon. Stone seemed to ignore racial conflicts and focus more on class and generational conflicts. Also the disabled veterans formed protests against the war, even though some, like Ron, had originally been against protests. –Samantha W. | ||
