Another thing the movie seemed to get right was the uniform of the black troops in the regiment in the South under the Colonel that ordered them to pillage the town. The black soldiers were wearing red trousers which Susie King Taylor describes in her piece, “The first suits worn by the boys were red coats and pants, which they disliked very much, for, they said, "The rebels see us, miles away."” They weren’t complete red suits in the movie but they did have the pants which I feel like were alluding to these. –Megan Mc.

This movie showed how there were so many things people had to deal with throughout the Civil War which were not clear. First, it portrayed well how this was not originally a war to abolish slavery (as mentioned in class). Next, it showed well how white northerners treated African-Americans in many different ways. Some were really racist and others were not. It showed the tension between the other military leaders on how tough they should be on the African-American soldiers. It seemed like each person had a different opinion. Also, with the burning of the town in Georgia, Shaw was cornered and had to decide what to do. If he refused to order his solders to burn the town then they could go under command of the bad General (I don't know his title). But if he agreed, then they would have to burn buildings and homes of innocent people. There was no right or wrong decision, because both were bad. I think this movie was very accurate and portrayed a lot of things that other civil war movies leave out. -- Justine R.
