| + | I think a lot of this movie was fairly accurate; at least more so than some of the other movies we have seen so far. Basic facts, such as going to the docks to look for a Mende translator or even giving most of the actors the correct names as they were in history. I think that the movie also accurately described the treatment of the slaves, at least in the prison. The scenes of the slaves on the ship did not accurately describe their treatment on the boat, but at the prison, I think it was clear that they were treated like animals. It just simply looked like it, the way they were almost "penned up." Also, when the one slave died while in prison, I think that scene of the other Mende slaves carrying around his nearly emaciated body sent a very clear message about the slaves' awful treatment. -- Alex M. | ||
Overall I was really pleased with the film in it's accuracy. From what I could tell, they got all the main points down correctly, such as their trip across the Atlantic, the uprising, and consequently their arrival in the colonies. The trial scenes all seemed accurate and probable for the time period. I really appreciated the films attention to little details. They could have left out "The Emancipator" or the change of judges to make things more simple, but I'm glad they didn't. It rounded out the story well. Although it was one of the most depressing parts of the film, I thought the capture and shipment of the slaves was very well done.
