What struck me especially about the second reading, in comparison to the movie, was the sheer brutality of it. In the first of the Brownfield, letters he goes through and vividly describes certain injuries which he saw or heard about. Now I am sure there was some embellishment added to this account but reading about Pearson being, "inhumanly mangled on on the face." And then going into a vivid account of how he was injured was almost to much. While reading I was once again confronted with the grotesque images of the movie. And even though I had seen the movie, and Dr. McClurken warned us about it being violent, I was still unprepared for it to be that brutal. It is really no wonder that soldiers today come back from war changed, even in the movie, Benjamin was changed from his experience in the French and Indian war. - Jenn | What struck me especially about the second reading, in comparison to the movie, was the sheer brutality of it. | + | Maybe it was just me, but I do not remember ever noticing loyalist vs patriot skirmishes in the movie. After reading "Rise of Partisan Warfare in the South," I was surprised at all the casualties that occurred in these "skirmishes." I wonder what percent of the total dead/wounded in the Revolution came from those small skirmishes in the back country South. Also, I wonder how important these "skirmishes" were in relation to the larger picture of the Revolution. Did they really matter in the end? -- Alex M. | ||
