| + | From reading "A Wartime Mistress", I was surprised how quickly the lack of an actor in a gender role had profound effects. For a slave to be openly defiant so quickly, it makes me wonder not only about the lack of worry about the mistress's punishment, but also the return of the master. Perhaps a feeling of freedom was already taking hold among some slaves with the temporary absence of their masters. --Robert Kopp | ||
