| + | Evas letters to her mother in law were extremely poignant in their observations about Georgia during the reconstructive era. She seems to have been an ardent confederate which was surprising because it said that she had been educated in the north. I find it amazing that even someone who had been educated in northern society could still believe so firmly in the institution of slavery. Although the confederates lost the war it seems that the rules set forth by the union army during reconstruction and occupation made it almost impossible for them to succeed. So I can understand why her letters have such a tone of bitterness in them. I don't blame her and her husband for relocating to the north until after reconstruction ended. I wonder if they faced any sort of discrimination there.-Emma Peck | ||
