| + | I thought Mary Andersons account was good as a contrast to the lives of most southern slaves. It seemed that Mary was a house servant and was well taken care of by her masters, which is probably why she was inclined to work on her masters plantation even after she had been granted freedom. I thought it was especially interesting that Marys mistress addressed her slaves as children. This is probably representative of her behavior towards her slaves, which seemed to be very maternalistic. However if she looked upon her slaves as her children they might have been subject to better treatment. I found it interesting that these particular plantation owners sought out there former slaves after freedom, I wonder if they did this as a kindness or if they did it because they knew they could be paid less then white laborers. -Emma Peck | ||
