I think Judith Murray was writing as a man because women generally did not publish their work. In "The Study of Margaretta" she talks about educating women. I am all for that especially the languages and actual education outside being a house wife. I was a little annoyed that it was assumed she would be conceited because of her education. Her parents had to cultivate a good woman and had to watch out that she would not become conceited in her superior knowledge. Educations does not equate to being conceited. It also annoyed me that they were talking about her virtues and how basically she was the perfect woman. She should not be eager for other people admiration's. Who would even think about that? It almost seemed to me that Margaretta should not want people to be envious but people should because she is such a good woman. | + | I was surprised about the wide variety of aspects in which women were expected to "perfect." Not only did girls need to learn housewifery skills like their mothers did when they were young, this new generation also learned more academic subjects so that they could teach their sons. -Allison Luthern | ||
