Both Taylor and Duffin’s report and Daniel Claus’s assessment indicate that the British viewed Molly Brant as a vital political connection as she represented British interests to Native Americans. As seen in Taylor and Duffin’s report, the fact that the British gave Molly Brant all the money she wanted shows their high opinion of her. Brant was also powerful within Native American communities. She persuaded a fickle chief to reaffirm his alliance to the British. Molly must have been a very intelligent woman to command the respect of both English and Native American leaders.  -Allison Luthern

I admire women during the American Revolution because they took this opportunity to try to change things for themselves.  I think their experiences made them stronger and gave them a stronger sense of who they were outside of the home. They were not afraid to speak out.  They knew the purpose of this war and supported their families - even if that meant throwing themselves into harm's way.  Esther Deberdt Reed did not want women to go unnoticed for their bravery in this war.  She doesn's take away the bravery of men but men were the ones who were looked at as "the hero."  She said it beautifully when she wrote, "we should at least equal, and sometimes surpass them in our love for the public good."  -Marsha Himes

I loved how Esther DeBerdt Reed spoke so strongly and patriotically. She believed that women could be as patriotic as men, even if they were not doing the same duties in the war. I agree with what Marsha about what Reed wrote about "surpass[ing] them in our love for the public good."  She believed that through strong patriotism and support for the country, the women could be active participants in the war, since they were not allowed to fight or take part in other areas of the war effort. She believed the men needed to know that the women were offering their help in any way possible. At the end of her writing, she writes, "Receive with a free hand our offering, the purest which can be presented to your virtue." Although the women could not participate as much as they may have liked, they were still more than willing to support the men who were fighting for them, in any and all ways possible. ---- Alex Mankarios

Although this article was not very long, nor really an article it provided a lot of clues about the slaves of Jefferson. This list definitely makes it appear as if Jefferson saw them as property. Especially when he includes in the list the children of some of his slaves instead of saying “Name, ____’s daughter” or something to that extent he simply writes “Hanah’s child.” The names also bring to mind what we talked about in class last week about the naming conventions. The names on the list are more Anglican than African with names like Patty, Sam, and Lucy. The name Quomina is the only one that seems to stick out. This shows that Virginia was more like the Northern states in that respect.–Megan Mc.

I found the writings from Sarah Osborn effective in studying women's roles during the Revolutionary War. At a time when women were still seen as only belonging in the home, she followed her husband and the army throughout the colonies. She performed domestic duties such as cleaning, mending clothing, and cooking for soldiers but was also seen as a member of the army. The point I found most interesting was at the surrender in Yorktown when Sarah thought something bad had occurred, asked a question and recieved the reply, "Are not you soldier enough to know what it means?" I found this to mean the soldiers treated her as an equal and should know the rules of the army, "mans world". Sarah Osborn broke traditional ideas of womens work in the eighteenth century and was able to see first hand the building of America. -Megan W.
