I haven't studied Native Americans in any of my college history classes but I remember studying them in high school. We focused on cultural practices (longhouses versus teepees essentially). We also talked about unfair treaties and the encroachment of Anglos on Indian land. We did NOT study anything about boarding schools or the various other attempts made by the Anglos to assimilate, convert, or get rid of the Native Americans. I know that when I approach these readings I am predisposed to be highly sympathetic towards Native Americans because their stories are so sad. -- Rebecca

While I learned about Native Americans in high school, most of my recent knowledge is from Professor Moon's American West class I am taking this semester.  We have talked a little about the boarding school experience and Native American life in general. Other than that my Native American knowledge is very limited.  I am also very sympathetic towards Native American history but I do also realize that I really don't know much about it. -- Kari W.

While I learned briefly about Native Americans in high school, most of my knowledge and understanding of Native Americans is the result of my college courses, mainly Dr. Devine's Seminar on Native American-White Relations and Dr. Moon's History of the American West class. Both courses touched upon these two Native American groups and the seminar expanded upon the experience of the Cherokee and their removal. I know that these courses have allowed me to have a more well-rounded understanding of Native American life and cultural practices. However, I realize that I have more to learn about Native peoples, particularly understanding American history from their perspective. Media and modern popular culture has undoubtedly also influenced our understanding of these and other Native Americans. --Sarah Gardner
