| + | Well, looking at the times that they lived in- Darwinism, reform, religious revival, the Civil War- it is no surprise that these people who are becoming obsessed with science wish to perfect America. It's like Walters says in the beginning of the book, that through sexual control came the elevation of the human spirit and intelligence, therefore creating a better and "true" civilization.
