| + | I wanted to elaborate on Kellye's point a bit and just point out that, as twenty-first century individuals, we tend to forget that (enslaved) black women once did not have ownership of their own bodies. Because they were property their bodies too were simply a thing that belonged to a white slave owner. Essentially, they were toys for their masters to play with, as horrible as that sounds. I did find it interesting though, that at one point Rothman discussed the issue of Malinda, a slave woman who killed another black man as he tried to sexually assault her. Against someone of her own kind, she had the ability to cry self-defense. Against any white man that typically was not the case. -Kelly | ||
