| + | The significance of raising a child and the process of weening was particularly important to these families. Women were raising their sons to be good citizens. The idea of self-control was a key part of this process. "All children, for example, had to learn basic physical, motor, and social skills- how to sit up, crawl, walk, talk, master their bowel and bladder functions, and how, what and when to eat- usually before their second birthday." page 109.
