(Extra Credit: What did the President's inaugural address say (directly or indirectly) about American families and individuals?)

President Obama emphasizes his belief in social mobility as a means of realizing success and the vitality of the support of a strong family network to achieve one’s goals and ambitions.  He has an extended family of diverse roots aiding him in his endeavors, which he states as being a crucial component to his personal, moral, and professional development.  In regards to the responsibility of the family and society in the upbringing of our children, Obama stresses the importance of a combined effort; while one’s family proves largely responsible for the nurturing of the child and helping advance individual development, public institutions exist for a reason: to extend aid to those with limitations (whether they be financial, psychological, situational, ect.).  Therefore, with the forces of both the individual family and our nation’s public institutions, Americans can better achieve ideal, educational goals and support systems for society’s youth. -Augusta

I couldn't help noticing Obama's remark about whether or not a government works. He points out that we know it works if it provides healthcare, financial stability in homes and senior care. This is a point brought up a few times in our class- how certain responsibilities and duties once a role in the family, is now the responisbility and role of the government. Celia M.
