| + | This article reminds me a lot of the movies I've seen that were made from 1930-1934. The representation of women really parallel what Lesueur is saying. Even though the the Production Code (morality censorship rules for movies) was written in 1930, many movies about immoral woman and other content continued to get made during the hardest years of the Depression, and it was fairly accurate too. Marlene Dietrich plays a woman in Blonde Venus that is so multifaceted, she is a single mother, she is desperate and on the brink of starvation, but she is also a "fallen woman", someone who has turned to the company of men (glamorously and not so glamorously) in order to make a little money for her baby. This was what I remembered when the unemployed women looked on, un-phased by the poor crazed girl. ~~jackie Reed | ||
