| − | | + | It strikes me as very strange that Magoffin refers to the noise of soldiers being "shocking to [her] delicate nerves." (234) She's described in the introduction to the Documents section as being a woman who traveled with her merchant husband out West; based on everything we know about the travel West, it was a dangerous, unforgiving trip--and one in which a person with "delicate nerves" would either toughen up or fall apart. Clearly, Magoffin did not fall apart on the trip to NM, which begs the question: why didn't she toughen up? Or was she in some way trying to regain the delicate sensibilities that women of the era were supposed to have? -- Nicole |
