Powhatan's "Speech to Captain John Smith" leaves me with multiple questions. I'm confused of who recorded it, was it John Smith? Also, how is it that the speech has suddenly become translated into english? On page 37, it says "The universal name the Monseys have for New York, is "laaphawachking"... They say this name was given in consequence of beads being here distributed among them by the Europeans." Does this imply that before the Europeans came, the Natives are believed not to have had names for places?? That seems mighty ridiculous to me.
