Although I'm hesitant to say that the women in Augusta gained power through the memorial ceremonies and rituals, it certainly seems true that they gained potency and presence.  Were these women, and others around the former Confederacy simply made symbols, or was this part of a greater process by which women gained political and social power? --Erin B.
