'''The movie accurately depicted the way wounded veterans' hospital conditions were deplorable.'''  The country was spending vast amounts of money and attention to rid the world of communism that it turned a blind eye and expended no money to the medical care of the wounded vets.  It took many years and lots of people to complain for veterans to get better medical care when they returned home.  Although conditions are better, many VA hospitals could use more funding to aid the recovery of wounded vets.  Another issue with what vets faced in returning home was the way in which they had to find a place to fit in to their home that no longer was home.  Because of the experiences the went through with just trying to survive, the person they were after coming come was no longer the person who left to fight in the war.  The became a very difficult situation for both the vet and the family.  They both needed to learn how to live with each other again.  The movie portrayed the difficulty Ron had trying to fit into his family again, and the person he had the hardest time with was his mother.  I think the problem came from his mother refusing to communicate about how the war changed her son and they never shared their feelings or experiences.  This was a shame.  Things could have been much easier if they were used to communicating.-Debbie M.

The thing that struck me most from the entire movie was the scene in the VA hospital in which he's screaming, "I WANT TO BE TREATED LIKE A HUMAN BEING.  DECENT.  THAT'S ALL."  For me, that really sums up how a lot of returning Vietnam vets felt after the war.  The public reaction to Vietnam was so different to that to WWII, and veterans were not prepared for the responses they got at all.  There are a lot of accurate parts of this movie, but for me, that scene really sums everything up.  -- P.A.
