Like Fred, Fussell also suffered post-traumatic stress disorder. While each veteran experienced it in different forms, the cause of their problems originated from their service during World War II. Somehow, the disorder was not a major problem until the Vietnam War.

Both the reading and the movie gave well-described scenarios of some of the effects that happen to service members.  Having a little closer knowledge of the military and how it works is quite intriguing.  They were also, from my perspective, were fairly accurate and something that military members try to deal with on their own and one that is hard to portray for civilians to completely understand.  These men and women (I would have loved to see a portrayal of a female service member in the movie, but we weren't important at that time I guess) in the military, especially in war lose something within themselves that they cannot even define themselves.  When coming home from such a long duration away, the movie and reading does a fine job of showing the difficulties that arise within the relationships at home.  Everyone is apprehensive about doing/saying the wrong thing or offending the other person.  It is quite intimidating when everything is taken into account. I wonder what the percentage of the returning troops from the war would have been represented by this movie.  I think the movie fails in a way with Al's family, I would hope that after 20 years of being married, the wife wouldn't be that stuffy, if so, I can understand Al's apprehension of going home.  I also didn't like the way that each of the guys took to alcohol to deal with their problems.  I know that alcohol was readily available, but I think the way they had all the guys at the bar their first night home would have been unrealistic.  But I do believe that Homer, I hope I have his name right, would have had the difficulty he portrayed.  Since he truly did lose his hands during the War, he part was accurately played.  But, it would have been difficult trying to relive it.-Debbie M.
