I agree that this movie does a great job showing the difficulties of readjusting to civilian life. As the guys mention on the plane ride home, sometimes returning home after that long is almost scarier than deploying in the first place. I think I was most impressed by the depiction of Homer's disability though. It was always so matter-of-fact, but showed how even once you think you've adjusted to something, there's always still more to be done. While some people were uncomfortable with Homer's prostheses, a lot of them, especially Wilma, just wanted to stay around him and get used to it. The film also showed the misunderstandings that can come from having a visible difference or disability, like when the little kids are actually watching Homer and Wilma because they want to spy on the grown ups who are in looooove, but Homer thinks they're staring because of his hands. | + | I thought the movie did a good job of trying to portray soldiers coming back from war from different walks of life. We had Al, the family man, Fred who was married, but with not much to come back to and an indifferent wife and then Homer, who came back to an un-certain situation at home. There was also the man who came into the bank and asked for a loan from Al. I’m sure many of the soldiers took advantage of this bill where the government would match half of what the bank provided. They all shared their different experiences of war, but not in great detail and I think the movie did a good job of capturing how many soldiers wanted to hide from their war experiences in public but in private they could not avoid them. Each character was emotionally fragile, but they dealt with it in different ways and ultimately I think each found peace with a woman (except maybe Al’s women was Jackie Daniels). –afrisk | ||
